Peanut Butter vs Cashew Butter: Which Should You Choose?

Peanut Butter vs Cashew Butter: Which Should You Choose?

Peanut butter and cashew butter look alike on the shelf, but they taste different, cost different amounts and suit different uses. Here's how they compare, so you can pick the right jar.

Taste and texture

Peanut butter has the bold, roasted flavour most Nigerians know from groundnuts. Cashew butter is milder, creamier and naturally a little sweet, even with no sugar added. People who find peanut butter too strong often prefer cashew.

Nutrition

Both are rich in healthy fats and give you steady energy. The main differences:

  • Protein: peanut butter has more protein per spoonful, so it's the better pick if protein is your main goal.
  • Fibre: peanut butter usually has a little more fibre.
  • Carbohydrates: cashew butter has more natural carbohydrate, which is where its gentle sweetness comes from.
  • Minerals: cashew butter is a good source of copper, magnesium and iron. Peanut butter is a good source of vitamin E and niacin.

Calories are similar, so neither one is a diet food. One to two tablespoons is a sensible serving for most adults.

Price

Cashews cost more to grow and process than peanuts, so cashew butter usually costs more per jar. Peanut butter is the better everyday buy for a family, while cashew butter works well as a treat or for people who prefer its taste.

Allergies

Peanuts are legumes and cashews are tree nuts. Someone allergic to one isn't always allergic to the other, but many people with a peanut allergy also react to tree nuts. If anyone in your home has a nut allergy, check with a doctor before trying either.

Best uses

  • Peanut butter: bread, yam and plantain, groundnut soup and stew bases, suya-style marinades, smoothies, oats and baking.
  • Cashew butter: pancakes, smoothies, creamy sauces and dressings, and desserts where you want a softer nut flavour.

Natural or sweetened?

Whichever nut you choose, read the label. Natural nut butters have one ingredient and no added sugar. Their oil rises to the top, so you stir before use. Sweetened versions have a little sugar and salt and stay smooth without stirring. For babies under 1 and anyone cutting down on sugar, natural is the better choice.

Dodan makes both styles of each: Natural Peanut Butter, Natural Cashew Butter and our sweetened range, all made in Suleja from roasted Nigerian nuts.

So which should you buy?

Choose peanut butter for more protein, a stronger flavour and a lower price. Choose cashew butter for a milder, creamier taste. Plenty of families keep a jar of each.
